The Transom Traveling Workshop is a week-long intensive training for beginning producers that takes place in various locations around the country. We offer Traveling Workshops in summer (June – August) and winter (December – February). The Traveling Workshop Scholarship is supported by Workshop alumni, This American Life, other generous contributors and Transom itself. We welcome donations from anyone at any time. Thank you.

Who is the scholarship for?
Our goal is to make the Traveling Workshop a realistic option for people who have been unable to attend due to cost. Scholarships will be offered based on financial need, with a focus on diverse voices, people of color, and those who have been historically underrepresented as makers of public media. Qualification for the Scholarship is considered once the applicant is accepted into the Workshop. For now, Scholarship funds are available only to people living in the U.S. and for Traveling Workshops happening in the U.S.
How much does it cost to attend the Workshop?
Tuition for Traveling Workshops varies from site to site but on average ranges from $1,900 – $2,100 and includes a copy of Hindenburg Journalist audio editing software, use of quality field-recording equipment, and a total of three group meals during the six days. Travel to and from the Workshop, housing, optional car rental fees, and additional miscellaneous costs are not included.
How much are Scholarships for?
Traveling Workshop scholarships are made up to the following maximum amounts: $2,500 for non-local students and $2,000 for local students (i.e. commuting to the Workshop from home) and are meant to cover tuition plus provide additional housing, travel and/or walking around money.
I can’t apply now. Will the scholarship be available in a year?
We can’t promise, but we hope to make it a forever thing.
Where do the funds for the Scholarship come from?
The seed money for our Traveling Workshop Scholarship came from a graduate, appreciative of the opportunity, who generously wanted to help open the door for others with fewer financial resources. Additional funds come from This American Life, as well as — we hope — other graduates and individuals who believe in the quality of the training we provide and in the importance of diversifying the public media work force.
