We stood pretty near the pit and came up with a couple of theories on how to make it through, most of them involving as much speed as possible. A day at the lawnmower races, embarrassingly, can turn you into a pedantic expert.

Behind the grandstand was an alley of teams and racers, some with elaborate tents and spreads, some with tools spread out on the grass. This is one of my favorite pictures ever. I may have it framed.

This is me, using the Olympus DM-1. I noticed with satisfaction that it is exactly the same kind of voice recorder used by the reporter in “Daredevil.”

If you’ve ever wondered why ride-on lawn mowers have handles on either side of the seat, it’s for leaning into the turn.

These guys were great; they come to the races every year. The Meldorf Slow Riders talked about a love of the open road and gave me a tip on number 80, who made it to the finals and is the last rider interviewed in the piece.
