Jim Russell was one of the first reporter/producers hired for the start-up of National Public Radio in 1971. He was the Executive Producer of NPR’s landmark news program All Things Considered, and helped conceive Morning Edition. During a ten-year stint in television, he led Twin Cities Public Television through a remarkable programming renaissance. His creation was the weekly PBS science program, Newton’s Apple, for which he won a national television Emmy Award. In 1989, Russell created Marketplace, the most successful business program on radio or television in the United States, now attracting more than 8 million listeners every week. He has created programs for NPR, PRI (Public Radio International) and American Public Media including The World and Weekend America. In 2006, Russell hung out his own shingle, launching Jim Russell Productions, “The Program Doctor”. Through this Chapel Hill, NC business, he consults with networks, stations and producers on the development of new programs and on “fixing” existing shows.
