During the ten years we’ve been running Transom, Atlantic Public Media has been hoping to create actual, on-the-ground workshops based on the website, conducted here on Cape Cod. Well, we’re getting ready to try it.
This Fall, the redoubtable radio instructor Rob Rosenthal (former head of the radio program at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies) is joining us to run a 7-week pilot Transom Story Workshop for beginning producers. Rob has a unique track record of developing talented storytellers, and combined with the Transom team and guests, we think this will be a special thing. Participants will produce a variety of pieces and work in conjunction with the public radio station we founded,WCAI, and with Transom.
Rob says, “Radio. The Transom crew. Cape Cod. That’s a trifecta. The plan is this: Provide the training and experience necessary to take students from ‘zero to producer’ in seven weeks. So, the workshop will be incredibly rigorous. Don’t expect a radio vacation on the Cape. Instead, expect to sweat and produce stellar radio stories.”
For now, we want to gauge interest, so we’re asking that you check out OUR SHORT, ONE-PAGE SURVEY. Even if this particular workshop isn’t for you, get on our list and tell us what you’re interested in. The survey will only take a minute or two.
Editor’s Note 6.28.2011: The survey is closed and applications are now being accepted! For more information check out the Information Page and FAQ . From that page, you’ll find a link to the online application.
Send questions to info at atlantic.org.

I should mention: The teaching space we want to rent has a wonderful water view of the harbor.
I wish I was a beginning radio producer so I could do this. Is there some kind of radio reset button.
Jesse, ditto.
You’re so right Jesse! What an incredible opportunity for the radio aspirant! A lovely, lovely location, a talented instructor, and the magic of radio. Lucky people.
Rob is a master teacher who knows more about the heart and soul of a radio story than anyone I know. He has a gift for making the complex seem simple. It is fun to learn from him. After working with Rob, you will come away with essential radio skills and techniques that will pull you forward into wanting to do more.

I’m really interested in this. I qualify as a beginner!
Sounds incredible!
So… if I have to lobby my boss for seven weeks off, I have to start lobbying soon
Will you be publishing more details any time soon? Do tell.
Indeed, we published the details and the application form just now, right here: http://transom.org/?p=18798
Agree so much with Jesse. Maybe you could consider something similar to reinvigorate more experienced producers at some stage. I would definitely be interested in that.
