Nice to Meet You: Profiles of Artists and Attendees

June 7th, 2011 | Andrea Silenzi & Jennifer Brandel

MEET: AIRPLANE BUSINESSMAN

Q: What do you do?
A: I work for General Motors in Kansas City, but live in Detroit.

Q: How do you develop your skills for this line of work?
A: I read A LOT.  I read the newspaper everyday. I read trade publications, and I talk to lots of people.

MEET: ANDREA DANCER

Andrea Dancer and with Victoria Fenner will be teaching a workshop this weekend where participants will explore  how to take the documentary to the poetic level that requires not just thinking of the sounds as artifacts, but as springboards to launch us into our collective imaginations.

MEET: SHEA SHACKELFORD

Shea tells us about a new place where he’s finding inspiration — a TV Show called Rescue Me. We won’t make fun of him for loving this TV show because we all have strange, completely unacceptable TV obsessions… right? Or are you too cool to fall into a Bachelorette wormhole?

MEET: JENN AND ANDREA AT 3AM AFTER A LONG DAY BLOGGING AND HOSTING A SMALL PARTY IN SOMEONE ELSE’S APARTMENT

Into the wee hours of last night, Jenn and I entertained a few guests at the apartment where we are staying. After they left, we put on adorable pajamas and then took a moment to reflect on an excellent day of festivaling for this blog.

My apologies for the audio quality — for some reason at 3am, I decided it was OK to forgo the windscreen on my PCM-D50 recorder, and make intentionally rushed, choppy edits.

MEET: AUDIO SMUT

Audio smut is a show about sex work, sex education, Queer thoughts, or any other form of different or “out-of-the-ordinary” sexuality. Anything concerning sex, in a nutshell! Two sex workers and a sympathizer host the show.

MEET: CHRIS STANTON

Chris Stanton hails from Edmonton, but is currently living in Toronto. He’s 1/4 of the Deep Wireless Ensemble Band and his specialty is as a performer and sound designer in the theater.

MEET: DOMINIQUE FERRATON

Dominique Ferraton is a radio artist living in Montreal. She did a great spur of the moment piece in the Big Shed square dance session, as well as contributed a piece on the Deep Wireless #5 compilation.  It’s track 6 called White Noise. Hear her describe that piece below. And then listen to it here. Or vice versa.

MEET: MARCELLE KOSMAN

Marcelle Kosman is a masters student at the University of Guelph and went to the Radio Without Boundaries Conference to learn about radio and sound.  And she’s working on a paper, like a thesis about… well you just have to listen to this.

MEET: ANDREW O’CONNOR
Andrew O’Connor is an independent radio producer and sound artist based in Toronto. He’s a Radio Without Boundaries veteran – having been to the Conference for 5 years.  He fielded two complex questions: 1) justify the existence/importance of public radio and transmission art, and 2) Why should someone come to the Radio Without Boundaries conference?
