When A Good Idea For A Podcast Is A Bad Idea For A Podcast

Listen to “When A Good Idea For A Podcast Is A Bad Idea For A Podcast”

Want to get an editor’s attention? Start with the subject line in an email. Whitney Henry-Lester at KUOW seriously piqued my interest with this:

“Why I will never make another episode of ‘How’s Your Day?’ podcast (and it isn’t even out yet).”

That’s good, right? I immediately wanted to know more.

In addition to a good subject line, Whitney suggested I talk to Arwen Nicks, one of the creators and producers of How’s Your Day? And, cleverly, she included a focus for the interview: When pitching podcasts “don’t come with an idea, come with a plan.”

Poof. An episode of HowSound was born. I interviewed Arwen and she completely lived up to the pitch. Arwen spells out exactly why she shot herself in the foot over and over and over again with a bad idea that, on the face of it, seemed pretty darn good. Arwen’s lessons on this edition of HowSound.

Interesting pot. Probably too late for this suggestion to Arwen, but instead of Googling to find small news stories that happened on big news days like 9/11, go to the library. Get microfilm for your day of choice. You’ll find no lack of stories. Old fashioned journalism is surprisingly effective.

Hey Peter, we spent quite a lot of time with the microfiche, i’ll always love the sound of those machines! I too appreciate the nose in the stacks approach and smaller newspapers and library resources were a great resource for us. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
